I'm a regular at Disneyland. I started taking my oldest daughter when she was just 3 months old so I could go on the rides and pretend like she really cared. well, everytime I go I have to stop at leather bracelet shop in Frontierland. It's super popular. You can pick what color leather band you want and then they carve your name into the bracelet. I have been getting them every time we go. My husband has every color, I have all the colors, even both my babies have some. The only problem is you can only carve your first name. No middle name, no last, no birthdates, no inspirational words, nada. Just a first name. So I went to Michaels and picked up some raw leather bands and made my own bracelets! This is not only easy but you can get super creative and not to mention I got eight raw leather bands for the price of one at Disneyland!
First you will need to buy raw leather bands or already stained leather bands. I found that Michaels had them for the best price. Eight bands for $7 and then you can use your 40% off coupon as well.
Now using a pencil first write out what you want on the leather band before you carve so you have something to follow. Lily wrote her own name so I could carve it for her.
On my bracelet I used an already stained leather band that was a little thinner. I bought the carving tools at Michaels here. This was $10 and it comes with different thicknesses of blades. I recommend practicing with one of your leather pieces because it's hard at first to do certain letters. In the picture above I'm using an already stained leather band but if you buy the raw leather bands carve them first, then stain.
If you want to get fancy with your leather bands you can use shoe polish to stain them or pick out some of these waterproof leather paints ($2.50) each. I bought them at Dharma Trading here.
Lily painted hers pink (of course).
And this was her finished piece.
Olive just ate her band : )
So I made one for her.
And here are some of our finished pieces. Go ahead try it!
The brown bracelet with the heart, was that a natural color leather that you used shoe polish on, and than painted a red heart on top of the shoe polish?
thank you! I love it :)
Yes! With that one I painted the red heart first with the leather paint and then I went over it with the shoe polish and just rubbed it off on the red heart. Gives it a more rustic look I think : ) Thanks so much!
I love these bracelets, and I thank you for posting this project. My sons and I will be making these to give as gifts for some family members to wear. Our nephew was in a car accident, and he is slowly coming out of a coma. He has 1 brother and 5 sisters, we are customizing bracelets for each of them plus his mom and dad to wear while he fights to come back, something they have as a constant reminder to encourage him. Thanks!
Oh my goodness, I am so, so sorry to hear about your nephew. I have a family friend that was in a similar situation and I want you to know he came out and fully recovered and is back in school doing extremely well. Be strong. Tell him to fight fight fight! XO.
Thanks for your words of encouragement, we are beginning to see improvements!! We have hope.... thank you!!!
Hey what is that bkade you use to carve with called??
